The Red Hook section of Brooklyn was once a center of ship building and repair. In the Erie Basin was Todd shipyards who specialized in the repair and refurbishing of commercial shipping. As this industry faded in New York and the yards moved to other states and countries, the yards began to deteriorate. Todd remained on a limited basis until 2005 when they finally sold the land to Ikea for a huge megastore. Community opposition could not stave off the inevitable and the store opened a couple of weeks ago. In an effort to soften the blow, Ikea took the old graving dock and piers and created a park-like promenade on the waterfront behind the store and parking areas. They left a few of the huge old cranes and some other artifacts and opened the promenade up to the public. You can read more about the Todd shipyards here
